In conclusion, SDCGO conceptually supports the idea of making sure criminals do not have weapons used to commit crime, nor do we want people who are mentally incapable of handling the enormous responsibility of firearms ownership to have access to guns. However, the way San Diego City Attorney Mara Elliot is processing GVROs is horribly dangerous and easily abused because she has no written process or procedure. She has no safeguards or minimum standards in writing.
Additionally, she was unable to give a reason for the need of GVROs. This was the most concerning part, frankly. She has no idea why they are issuing GVROs and gave multiple, nonsensical reasons. As we pointed out in our first Agenda Setting letter to her, every GVRO that she issued was for some kind of behavior that is already illegal.
