Women and Firearms Training – A Whole New World

Female instructor showing female shooter proper grip

When I got involved with shooting, one of the things that really called to me was camaraderie with other female shooters. There are not a lot of resources for female gun owners, and on my journey to becoming a gun enthusiast, instructor, and Executive Administrator for San Diego County Gun Owners, I searched all corners of San Diego to find ways I could engage with other female shooters.  One such way was becoming a chapter leader for our San Diego chapter of The Well Armed Woman Shooting Chapters.

The Well Armed Woman Shooting Chapters (TWAW) is the fastest growing national women’s shooting organization. TWAW Shooting Chapters has 349 chapters all around the country, representing 49 states. In just a few years, it has grown to over 10,500 members! It is “Where the Feminine and Firearms Meet” and aims to “educate, empower, and equip” women in all walks of life. Each chapter generally meets monthly for both classroom and range time.

The Well Armed Woman’s retail side also offers tons of advice and products geared towards the female shooter. Membership also gives you access to tons of amazing perks – including discounts on firearms, 5.11 products, and other great accessories!

The San Diego Chapter of The Well Armed Woman

We meet on the first Thursday of each month, and the education portion of our meetings have covered various topics ranging from shooting and self defense to basics such as gun cleaning or how ammunition works. There are so many more topics to cover and we can’t wait to share our knowledge and the knowledge of others with our members. We also have experienced female shooters who can give you tips during range time, including our two chapter leaders who are both NRA certified instructors.

We typically meet at The Gun Range San Diego, but occasionally do “field trips” for different training, including the GlockStore San Diego for shooting on the move, P2K Range for trap shooting, and Warfighter Academy for force-on-force training.

Our next meeting is October 11, 2017, at 6:30 p.m. at The Gun Range San Diego, and for our education portion, we will be discussing “bug out bags.” For information on our next meeting and topics check us out on Facebook or email us at TWAWsd@gmail.com. I look forward to seeing you there!

Other Local Clubs

While TWAW leans towards the self-defense aspect of shooting, there are tons of other organizations out there. A Girl & A Gun is a national shooting organization that focuses on competitive shooting sports. A few years ago, AG&AG sent the first all-female team to IDPA nationals!

We are lucky to have two chapters of AG&AG here in San Diego. The Vista Chapter is based out of Empowered Firearms in Vista, CA. They meet monthly for classroom and simulation range time, and a monthly trip to a local competitive match.

The San Diego Chapter is based out of Discount Gun Mart (Morena Blvd.) in San Diego, CA. They meet monthly for classroom and live fire range time, and a monthly trip to a local competitive match.

Wendy is owner of Black Cat Firearms Training and an NRA certified instructor who specializes in firearms training for female shooters. She is also the executive administrator for San Diego County Gun Owners.
